Chapter Seven
December 13, 2010
Boston, Massachusetts
Philip’s brothers were waiting for him in his office Monday morning. They flanked his desk, holding champagne flutes despite the early hour. There wasn’t even an ounce of orange juice in sight, as far as Philip could tell. So much for keeping up appearances.
“Come on, little brother.” Jonathan lifted his glass in greeting. “We’re celebrating.”
He quirked his lip in a feeble smile. Exhaustion pressed down like a boulder between his shoulder blades. He’d gotten two hours of sleep last night, and even less the night before. The black-and-white picture of Mark and Cameron had haunted him every time he closed his eyes. And when he’d finally managed to slip into dreamland, Cameron had come alive, beckoning to him, holding the door to The Silver Whip open and inviting him inside while Mark watched, devastated.
“What’s with you?” Daniel grabbed a third glass that had been set out on Philip’s desk and handed it to him. “You don’t look so hot. Late night with… What’s her name? Tiffany?”
“Trinity.” Philip tossed his briefcase on his leather chair. He’d hired her a couple of weeks ago to be his date at Daniel’s thirty-fifth birthday bash. She’d made quite an impression, showing up in a backless red sequined dress that showed off her considerable assets.
“Right.” Jonathan smirked. “A woman like that probably doesn’t let you get much sleep, huh?”
Philip shook his head. His love life was the last topic of conversation he wanted to explore this morning, so he racked his brain trying to remember if his brothers were working on any major cases. He could only think of one, which was in the preliminary stages of information gathering. “Did we settle the Stevens case?”
“Nope.” Daniel wiggled the glass so the golden liquid almost splashed over the rim. “We did one better.”
Philip took the champagne. He looked from Jonathan to Daniel, took in their beaming smiles and shrugged. “All right, I give. What are we celebrating?”
Daniel clinked his glass with a flick of his nail. “You.”
The silvery chime offered no further insight into what this was all about, and Philip was about to say as much when Jonathan leaned in conspiratorially. “Dad’s going to make you partner today.”
The champagne flute nearly slipped from Philip’s fingers. “He’s… what? Already? But it’s only been a few months.”
“Why the hell are you protesting?” Jonathan leaned his hip against Philip’s desk. “You deserve it, little brother. All that work you’ve been putting in, all those successful cases you’ve wrapped up. You’re a natural. A real Kendall. We’re all damn proud of you.”
A chill raked Philip’s spine. He took a swig of his champagne, and the fizzy alcohol rushed straight to his head, clouding his better judgment. “Shit. I got you all fooled, don’t I?”
Daniel frowned. “What’s that supposed to mean? And how come you’re not smiling?”
“I’m not?” He forced a wide grin, the kind that made his cheeks ache. He knew it looked fake as hell, and he didn’t care. “How’s this? Better? I should start practicing now.
